Project: Mentoring in the classroom at Dona Ana Community College (DACC)
Spring 2023 - Pilot Project in a Biology course
In Spring 2023, a pilot project was initiated with the goal to better support DACC students in their academic performance and transfer rates to a 4-year institution.
The pilot project included placing a mentor in a Biology class with prior experience in taking that course and an interest in helping Community College (CC) students.
The evaluation of this pilot project consisted of student pre-and post-surveys, observations, and journaling.
Some of the findings/results showed that CC students appreciated the guidance and support of the mentor. Mostly, CC students lack this figure in their academic pathway.
Fall 2023 - Spring 2024 Courses in Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (SEM) at DACC implemented this mentoring approach
Each semester, fifteen courses in the SEM Unit implemented having a mentor in the classroom, classes have different formats - in-person and online
The evaluation consisted of pre-and post-experience surveys for students who had a mentor in their courses and a couple of focus groups with the mentors and faculty
Fall 2024 - Courses in Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (SEM) at DACC continue providing mentoring
Twenty courses in the SEM Unit include a mentor in the classroom, classes have different formats - in-person and online
The evaluation will consist of pre-and post-experience surveys for students who had a mentor in their courses and focus groups with students, mentors, and faculty
